Used Book Sale
Hold on to your used books!
Until further notice, we will not be accepting
or picking up books due to the
COVID-19 Pandemic
In 2019, sixteen hundred people took home bargains at the Rotary’s tenth annual Used Book Sale in January of last year. The sale at Bayside Mall, Sarnia, offered over 27,000 books from which community members took home enough reading to last through the remaining winter months. The event offered a long deserved reward to those who came despite the large blizzards of the previous week. The three-day event attracted people particularly interested in hard and soft cover Fiction. Others came to search their favourite categories such as Children and Youth, Cooking, History and Politics, Sci-Fi and Sports.
The Used Book Sale was started as the brainchild of Rotarian Jean Cowper in 2003.  Based on investigating a book sale in Goderich, she plunged into organizing the first sale at the Dow Centre in Centennial Park, Sarnia.  Adding the book sale to other events such as Hobbyfest created more exposure for the activity; however, a rain storm ruined many of the books.  Subsequent sales moved to Lambton Mall for a few years and then to our current location at the Bayside Centre.
Sorting of books for the sale started at Taylor’s Furniture, the business of Rotarian Nancy Dease, in the early 2000s.  Sorting now occurs every month of the year on Wednesdays at Bayside Centre.  Sorting consumes the labour of eight volunteers from the public who all love books and want to conserve them.  Another volunteer dispatches Rotarians to pick-up books from residents unable to drop them at Bayside Centre or Lambton Mall.
Of inestimable value to the Used Book Sale are the donations-in-kind from Huron Web Printing & Graphics, and Bayside Centre.
